École Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Nancy – Mines Nancy stands out in the Geosciences thematic ranking published by DAUR, securing 2nd place nationwide in the Focus Geosciences – DAUR Ranking of Engineering Programmes. This result confirms the strong position of Mines Nancy—and more broadly of Nancy—in the field of geosciences, notably alongside ENSG and the GeoRessources laboratory, both major historical, academic and scientific references in geosciences in France.

A thematic ranking based on an in-depth analysis of degrees

Unlike general rankings, DAUR adopts a degree- and sector-based approach, offering a more accurate reflection of the diversity of programmes and skills. Geosciences encompass a wide range of fields, including geology, geophysics, mineral resources, natural hazards, geomatics, topography, spatial planning, and subsurface sciences.

The ranking also distinguishes between training pathways (full-time students, apprenticeships), enabling more relevant comparisons between programmes.

A Top 3 bringing together the historic leaders in geosciences

In this Focus Geosciences, the national Top 3 highlights three benchmark institutions:

  • Mines Paris – PSL
  • École Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Nancy
  • École Nationale Supérieure de Géologie

Mines Nancy: a geosciences and civil engineering programme recognised for its scientific depth and strong field focus

This 2nd place reflects the core strengths of the Geosciences and Civil Engineering programme at Mines Nancy:

  • a high level of scientific excellence, supported by internationally recognised research laboratories;
  • a strong emphasis on fieldwork, projects and case studies;
  • close links with industrial and institutional stakeholders in the geosciences sector;
  • an approach fully aligned with contemporary challenges: energy transition, critical raw materials, natural risk management and sustainable territorial development.

As DAUR rightly points out, a ranking is above all a comparative tool. It cannot replace an in-depth qualitative analysis of programmes, which must take into account:

  • the detailed content of specialisations,
  • the nature and quality of internships,
  • links with research,
  • teaching methods and student life,
  • as well as location and the academic environment.

It is precisely this combination of academic and scientific excellence, openness and student experience that makes the Geosciences programme at Mines Nancy truly distinctive.
